Creativity through constraint. led by George Wilson.
Limitations – real or perceived – force a photographer to deviate from the plans and preconceived notions into unknown areas. They force a different manner of thinking and allow creativity percolate. Fundamental to my own photographic experience, limitation is the catalyst urging us to explore new possibilities and delve deeper into story work for the ever-elusive core. Creative constraint offers avenues for both discovery and growth. In this class, we will create limitations for capturing images and then push the edge of the creative cocoon in the ideation of possibilities.
Note: the genesis for this class comes from my early days in the newsroom. Traveling on the subway or running to keep pace with an evolving story, you were limited to only the gear you could carry and the film you had in your bag. But, you had to return from the assignment with images for deadline.
Travel a short distance from Spearfish, SD (+/-35 minutes) to Bear Butte State Park. The Lakota call it Mathó Pahá (“Bear Mountain”) while the Cheyenne know it as Noahȧ-vose (“Giving Hill”) or Náhkȯhe-vose (“Bear Hill”). Regardless of the name, the geological entity most commonly known as Bear Butte is considered to be a very sacred site to Native Americans. It is considered a place where the earth meets the sky, a gateway to the spiritual world, and a site for prayer, meditation, and vision quests. At 1,200 feet above the plains – it is a high and beautiful place, but the beauty is distinctly rugged and hard edged.
